KATIE O’BRIEN,
FEATURED ARTIST –
Dan Camp( b.1947) is a prolific San Diego artist who creates large
epics in oil. He is also a renowned portraitist. He still believes in
the concept of the muse. Using high-art tropes in an age signaling the
end of painting, Camp’s paintings embrace inter-psychical emotions,
gesture, metaphor and – an anathema of the age – the male gaze.
Invariably Camp’s work uses the contemporary female figure as a
stand-in for goddesses, femme fatales, naiads, etc. all of which are
understood to be personified energies, especially in the creative act.

Dan Camp was raised in La Jolla where at age eleven he was enrolled in
a portrait class in oils in the studio of Walter Willoughby.
Graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Principia
College, in 1976 he received an MFA from UCSD with an emphasis in film
and painting. From 1977 to 1990 he was an instructor of art at Mira
Costa College. Camp has been exhibiting in many local galleries and
art exhibitions steadily since 1968 and can count Senator John Warner
of Virginia and the actor Richard Burton as among his many collectors.
